It is one thing to call the body of Christ and the nation to repentance. It is another thing to determine how I will live as an individual going forward. A good example is found in Joshua 24:1-15. He led the nation in renewing their covenant with God, but he also made a decision for himself and his household. There is no doubt that we need to repent as a nation considering what is going on around us. But what’s your decision as an individual concerning how you want to live from now on considering where we are coming from and the calamities that have befallen us?

So, in light of the situation we are in, how should I position myself as a child of God? What should my disposition be? My prayer is that the current circumstances would cause us as Kenyans to consider our ways and desire a change of heart. Firstly, may we seek the Lord and find Him in the midst of all that’s happening. Secondly, may we allow Him to work in us leading to renew our minds so that our values may change to reflect His. May our outlook on life change. May we begin to understand and appreciate His will for us. May our hearts of stone be replaced by hearts of flesh that He can mould. May greed and the desire for the material not be our default setting. May compassion for the things of God and His people be our priority. Amen. Matthew 5:3-10.

In Exodus 17:1-7, the people of Israel had driven Moses to the wall with their complaints. Their faith had dwindled due to the hardships they experienced and they mumbled against God and wanted to return to slavery. As a country, we are past mumbling and feeling entitled, I hope. I hope we realise how low we have sunk to attract such calamities as covid-19 and locusts. We corrupt without flinching, we engage in the worst forms of idolatry and immorality, we murder for pleasure or wealth and power, we enslave for pleasure. Yet God is willing to cleanse us and take us in to Himself, but only if we are willing to let go of the filth. The Lord heard the cry of Israel and gave them water, then manna, then meat, victory in countless battles and finally led them to the land of promise. Israel’s greatness can be traced to such humble beginnings. Are we willing to sincerely cry out to Him and to forsake our wily ways? Is our cry of repentance genuine?

The importance of being in God’s will and being a woman/man of faith who stands in the gap is seen in Genesis 18:16-33, where Abraham pleads for Sodom before its destruction. The fact that the Lord honours such faith is seen in His willingness to listen to Abraham and also to spare the city if only 10 righteous people were to be found there. May we be found worthy of standing before the land and standing in the gap for others.

The concept of praying for one another or standing in the gap for others is not foreign. In Exodus 17:10-15, Moses lifted the staff of God in His hands as Joshua led the army in war against Amalek. This may have signified the glory of God, and is the origin of the name Jehovah Nissi. Allow me to use this analogy to encourage us to constantly pray for one another and for the church and nation. I hope we will one day hear great testimonies of breakthrough due to God’s mercy because of our action of faith.

It may not be easy under the circumstances you are in, but give thanks. Your heart may be heavy due to grief, fatigue, the many challenges you are facing, but give thanks. Where you are unable to do so please let us know so we can give thanks on your behalf. We may only focus on the current circumstances, but God sees the bigger picture. Even in our challenges He is sustaining us, so there is reason to be thankful Psalm 136.

The challenges we face can either be to build our character – James 1:2-4 – or an opportunity for God to be glorified, or a consequence of our sin. Whichever way, the role of our faith and understanding is critical when we undergo challenges. May Jeremiah 32:27, Matthew 19:26 and Mark 9:23 help shape our attitude during such times.

Will there be challenges when I decide to live for Him? Of course there will be. But even then, He gives counsel on how we ought to live. He also assures us He will never forsake us 1 Timothy 4:1-10, Psalm 94:14, Hebrews 13:5, etc.

My response to our discussion therefore is to live for Him. If He loved me to the extent of giving up His only Son for me, then I will live for Him. I will not become a slave of others, I’d rather be His slave & remain in Him (1 Cor 7:22-24). And He graciously enables me to live for Him 2 Peter 1:3-4.

Seeing that the greatest sacrifice was made for our sake, let us reflect on this a little. What does this mean for us? I therefore feel obliged to respond to that great deed. I need to realise that I am not my own, rather I belong to God. He did it to woo me to Himself. I should therefore heed what 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 and 7:22-24 say.
