One if the most dramatic accounts in the bible is found in 1 Kings 18:16-46. Elijah heard God and was used of Him to do extraordinary things starting with the declaration of drought, then the raising of the boy, both in chapter 17, then the challenge to Ahab and the prophets of Baal and the declaration of rain in chapter 18. Despite hearing from God, Elijah must have had extraordinary courage to do what God told him to do. May we learn to see beyond our fears and expectations especially where they hinder God’s will.

Self preservation makes even the most devout Christians do things out of fear instead of trusting in the Lord. It makes us rely on human wisdom rather than God. A good example is found in 1 Kings 18:1-15. May the Lord help us to see beyond our own plans or imagination.

So I purpose to love more and have more faith, also living in hope concerning the coming of Christ and the salvation of the elect. May I be able to tap into God’s available grace consistently so that i can live like this. I pray that He would forgive me where i fall short and that fellow humans would do so too. 1 Thessalonians 5:8.

Christ will return unexpectedly, so we must be ready. We can prepare ourselves by standing firm on His word when we are tempted and being committed to God’s moral standards. In what ways does your life show your readiness or lack of preparation for Christ’s return? 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11.

How do you live life? Is your focus only on what’s happening now or does the future occupy your thoughts? Are you only concerned about your needs or do you also think about what’s to come? Revelations 16:15.

According to bible scholars, Nineveh actually remained intact for about 100 years after Jonah’s mission. In Jonah 3:4, the prophecy stated that the city would be destroyed 40 days after its proclamation. This shows us God’s mercy and grace extends to all. The people of Nineveh were so wicked and “didn’t deserve” God’s favour. But He spared them for a long time. Even as we pray for our estate, village, town, country, company, family, let us ask God to give us the grace to look beyond our emotions and seek His mind concerning that place.

After calamity was averted because of God’s mercy and Jonah’s intervention, Jonah became so angry, that he wanted to die rather than see Nineveh prosper. God then does an amazing thing with a vine to show Jonah why he shouldn’t be angry, why He shouldn’t desire the city’s destruction and why He was concerned about it. Are you angry about Kenya, your city, town or village? Has the Lord called you to do something about it? Accomplish your task and leave the rest to Him. Jonah 4:1-11.

God is patient and merciful. Jonah finally gets to Nineveh after one of the most interesting occurrences. Jonah 1:4-2:10. He then fulfills his mission with God’s help. Jonah 3:1-10. God spares Nineveh despite its wickedness. We are so fortunate to have a loving God.

Jonah took off in the opposite direction away from Nineveh, instead of to that great capital of Assyria, described as wicked. He was driven away from his assignment by fear of the assignment’s magnitude. Are we also avoiding a difficult task the Lord has given us? Jonah 1:2 & 4:11.

What assignment have we been called to do? Are we doing it or avoiding it like Jonah in Jonah 1:1-3? If we are avoiding it, why is that?
