Jonah took off in the opposite direction away from Nineveh, instead of to that great capital of Assyria, described as wicked. He was driven away from his assignment by fear of the assignment’s magnitude. Are we also avoiding a difficult task the Lord has given us? Jonah 1:2 & 4:11.

What assignment have we been called to do? Are we doing it or avoiding it like Jonah in Jonah 1:1-3? If we are avoiding it, why is that?

The one friendship that blows my mind was the one between God and Abraham. The latter is referred to as a friend of God. The Lord honoured Abraham so much, that He made one of the greatest promises to him and confirmed it with a sign in Genesis 15:12-21. Abraham honoured God too and tried walking according to God’s statutes. Would you be considered a friend of God?

Amos 3:3 and Matthew 18:18-20 mention the importance & impact of teamwork. Paul and Barnabas planted many churches, trained church leaders and impacted many Christians on their first missionary journey. Work becomes easier when there is friendship in a team. These two men accomplished so much because they walked in agreement. May the Lord give us covenant friends we can work with to accomplish what He wants us to do. Acts 14.

The description of Job’s friends’ actions in Job 2:12-13 convinces me that they truly loved and cared for him. They empathized with him so deeply, that they behaved that way. May we be challenged by this show of love to care more for the covenant friends God has placed around us.

What sort of friend are you/what sort of friends do you have? In Job 2:11, Job’s friends went to see him, when they heard, what had befallen him. They did a poor job of comforting him, but at least they made the effort to go and stand with him.

In our search for truth let us not be mislead by others whose mission is characterised by ignorance, false teaching, personal interests, grumbling, etc. Jude 8-14.

If we are to be accused of anything, let it not be corruption, murder, etc. Let it be our zeal for God, like what happened to Paul in Acts 25:13-22. Festus was at a loss to explain what the charges against Paul were. May the Lord help us.

In Luke 12:1-3, Jesus calls the Pharisees hypocrites. Hypocrisy can be defined as trying to appear good when one’s heart is far from God. It is knowing the truth but not obeying it. It is also living a self-serving life or reducing faith to a bunch of rules. It is outward conformity without inner reality. Are we guilty of this? May the Lord help us.

It is alright to be ambitious. But seek the Lord concerning what to do or not to do. We should put in effort in learning to love others like Christ did. That will help to bring out the best in them. The phrase striking a balance comes to mind when I think about those two things. May the Lord help us make good decisions no matter what we are going through. Psalms 127:1-2 and Eccl 12:1-14 will hopefully help us make sense of life.
